BiologíaBiology
everything for this year's biology — one spread
4 units · 8 OAs · 65 h · 30 resources
The biology strand of 2° Medio (Decreto 1264/2016), inside Ciencias Naturales: 8 objectives in four units, from nervous and hormonal coordination to sexuality and reproduction, cellular and Mendelian genetics, and on to biotechnology and bioethics. The sources worth keeping are here, and the gaps worth closing first are mapped below. The decree fixes no hours for the strand: the school splits its ~76 h a year for Ciencias Naturales across Biology, Physics and Chemistry, so the 65 h these units sum to (U1 17 h, U2 22 h, U3 17 h, U4 9 h) are referential.
Unit 1· 17 h
Coordinación y regulaciónCoordination and regulation
How the nervous system coordinates the body’s actions and how the endocrine system regulates blood glucose and sexual characteristics. The unit adds neurobiology (neurons, reflex arc, brain) and endocrinology (hormones, homeostasis).
Unit 2· 22 h
Sexualidad y reproducciónSexuality and reproduction
Human sexuality with an integrated view: physical, biological, social, affective and psychological. The unit goes through fertilization, implantation and embryonic development, the prevention of teenage pregnancy, the care it takes and the responsibilities of parenthood. It also covers fertility-regulation methods and the importance of sexual self-care.
Unit 3· 17 h
How genetic material passes from generation to generation: how mitosis and meiosis compare, and what happens when cell division loses control. And Mendel’s principles, applied to how traits pass in plants and animals.
Unit 4· 9 h
Applications of genetic manipulation (genetic engineering, transgenic organisms, gene therapy), with a critical look at the ethical and social implications.

Official programme
Biology lives inside the integrated Ciencias Naturales 2° Medio programme: objectives OA 01–08 of the plan's 22 (Physics 09–14, Chemistry 15–18). The decree fixes no hours for the biology strand; the school assigns them inside the integrated subject. Here the strand is worked at ~65 h a year (U1 17 h, U2 22 h, U3 17 h, U4 9 h), inside the ~152 h of Ciencias Naturales.

Without distinguishing nucleus, mitochondria, membrane or eukaryote/prokaryote differences and cell types (nervous, pancreatic), "neuron" (OA 01) is just a word and "mitosis" (OA 06) happens in a vacuum. Comes from 8° básico U2, a unit many courses cut or leave as rote memorization.1–2 semanas (30 min/día)1–2 weeks (30 min/day)
Lo mismo con "las hormonas regulan la homeostasis" (OA 02).Not recalling what digestion, circulation, respiration and excretion do, and not understanding homeostasis as dynamic equilibrium, leaves "the nervous system coordinates" (OA 01) empty: coordinates what, exactly? The same goes for "hormones regulate homeostasis" (OA 02).1 semana1 week
Confusing ovulation with menstruation, not knowing sperm and oocyte are haploid cells, or thinking fertilization equals pregnancy blocks OA 03–05 and also the basis of meiosis (OA 06). Comes from 7° básico U4, sometimes treated as guidance without biological rigor.1 semana1 week
Confusing evolution with "monkeys became humans", not telling homologous from analogous structures apart or reducing natural selection to "survival of the fittest" leaves Mendel (OA 07) without evolutionary meaning, and biotechnology (OA 08) as "cool tech" without a why.1–2 semanas1–2 weeks
Not knowing a neuron has dendrites, soma, axon and synaptic terminals, or that its signaling is electrical (action potential) and chemical (neurotransmitters), makes the reflex arc and the synapse of OA 01 hard to follow.3–5 días3–5 days
Not distinguishing nervous communication (fast, specific, brief) from hormonal (slow, diffuse, lasting) and confusing a hormone with an enzyme or a gland leaves the blood-glucose and menstrual-cycle regulation model (OA 02) as blind memorization.2–3 días2–3 days
Not understanding what an allele is, failing to tell genotype from phenotype, or being unable to do an Aa×Aa Punnett square → 1:2:1 and move to a 3:1 phenotypic ratio blocks OA 07. It is new content in 2° Medio; the block is about proportional reasoning, not memory.1–2 semanas1–2 weeks
Cada unidad introduce 15–20 términos, y los indicadores piden "vocabulario disciplinar pertinente".Using gene and chromosome as synonyms, confusing genotype with phenotype or not being solid on allele, locus, homozygous/heterozygous, haploid/diploid, mitosis/meiosis and synapse blocks every OA. Each unit introduces 15–20 new terms, and indicators demand "appropriate disciplinary vocabulary".1 semana (flashcards)1 week (flashcards)
Confusing photosynthesis with respiration, not placing them in the chloroplast or the mitochondrion, and forgetting plants also respire gets in the way in OA 01 and OA 06, where it is assumed cells need ATP to function and divide.2–3 días2–3 days
Not recalling the double helix or that a chromosome holds a long strand of DNA with many genes (gene ≠ chromosome ≠ DNA) makes it hard to grasp that genetic material is copied and distributed in mitosis and meiosis (OA 06), and that manipulating genes means manipulating DNA (OA 08).2–3 h2–3 hours
