Manipulación genética: aplicaciones y éticaGenetic manipulation: applications and ethics
Official (MINEDUC)
Investigate and explain the applications that have arisen from genetic manipulation to produce food, detergents, clothing, pharmaceuticals or others, and evaluate their ethical and social implications.
Suggested indicators
- Explain concrete everyday examples of terms such as genetic engineering, genetic manipulation, gene therapy, transgenic organisms and biotechnology.
- Formulate hypotheses about effects of genetic manipulation in response to questions or problems from their immediate environment and society.
- Argue ethical implications, legislation and limitations of cloning (therapeutic and reproductive) through debates and discussions.
- Debate consumption of transgenic foods considering risks and benefits for health, agriculture and livestock.
- Evaluate the impact on daily life, economy and environment of genetic engineering and biotechnology with enzymes for detergents, biofuels or clothing applications, among other examples.
- Evaluate social, economic and environmental impact, among others, of biotechnological innovations such as insulin and drug production and generation or creation of vaccines.
Prerequisite gaps
Célula: estructura, orgánulos y tipos celulares
Cell: structure, organelles and cell types
Without distinguishing nucleus, mitochondria, membrane or eukaryote/prokaryote differences and cell types (nervous, pancreatic), "neuron" (OA 01) is just a word and "mitosis" (OA 06) happens in a vacuum. Comes from 8th-grade U2, a unit many courses cut or leave as rote memorization.

Evolución: selección natural y evidencias
Evolution: natural selection and evidence
Confusing evolution with "monkeys became humans", not distinguishing homologous from analogous structures and reducing natural selection to "survival of the fittest" leaves Mendel (OA 07) without evolutionary meaning and biotechnology (OA 08) as "cool tech" without a why.

Vocabulario disciplinar biológico
Biological disciplinary vocabulary
Using gene and chromosome as synonyms, confusing genotype with phenotype and not mastering allele, locus, homozygous/heterozygous, haploid/diploid, mitosis/meiosis or synapse blocks every OA: each unit introduces 15–20 new terms and indicators demand "appropriate disciplinary vocabulary".

ADN: estructura y jerarquía cromosómica
DNA: structure and chromosomal hierarchy
Not recalling the double helix or that a chromosome contains a long DNA with many genes (gene ≠ chromosome ≠ DNA) makes it hard to grasp that genetic material is copied and distributed in mitosis/meiosis (OA 06) and that manipulating genes means manipulating DNA (OA 08).

How to study it
observe → name → explain → recall: look at the diagram or phenomenon first, name each structure with its function before memorizing definitions, explain the process aloud in your own words, then close with active recall — 5 spaced-repetition flashcards per concept.
after ONE diagram or process, pause and redraw it from memory labeling each part — without looking.
