Propiedades coligativas de las solucionesColligative properties of solutions

Propiedades coligativasColligative propertiesUnidad 2 · 14 hUnit 2 · 14 h
Plan and conduct an experimental investigation to provide evidence explaining the colligative properties of solutions and their importance in everyday processes (preserving fruit and jams) and industrial ones (additives in radiator water).
  1. Plan and run experimental investigations evidencing the colligative properties of solutions (vapor-pressure lowering, boiling-point elevation, freezing-point depression, osmotic pressure).
  2. Explain the lowering of a solution’s vapor pressure using Raoult’s law.
  3. Experimentally determine boiling-point elevation and freezing-point depression for solutions of different concentrations.
  4. Explain everyday and industrial processes based on osmotic pressure (fruit and jam preservation, antifreeze additives in radiators).
  5. Compute variables (moles, mass, volume, temperature) in electrolyte solutions using osmotic pressure (π = M·R·T) and the Van’t Hoff factor (i), following Arrhenius.
  6. Organize and graph experiment data, assess reliability and communicate conclusions using disciplinary vocabulary.

  • Fundamentos de 1° Medio flojos (mol, masa molar, estequiometría)

Shaky 1° Medio foundations (mole, molar mass, stoichiometry)

The critical risk: 2° Medio opens with molarity in week 1 and never re-teaches the mole. Grams ↔ moles ↔ particles conversions get stuck; molar masses get mis-summed (H₂O = 16+1 or 18?); the limiting reactant goes unrecognized. 1° Medio stoichiometry lands at year-end, exactly where it gets cropped.

  • Regla de tres / razonamiento proporcional

    Cross-multiplication / proportional reasoning

Proportions set up inverted or by counting up ones, with no reasonableness check. All the concentration arithmetic, the dilutions (C₁V₁=C₂V₂) and the solubility-curve reading are chained proportions.

  • Balanceo de ecuaciones químicas

    Balancing chemical equations

Balancing becomes "making the numbers pretty": subscripts get changed instead of coefficients, and 4+-species equations win. Every problem that links solutions to reactions starts from a balanced equation, and electrolyte dissociation in colligatives also demands counting atoms.

  • Despeje algebraico en fórmulas

    Algebraic rearrangement of formulas

Given M=n/V they compute M but cannot solve for n or V; factors move wrong across the equals sign; panic at Greek letters (ΔTf, Kb, x₁). The hard context: 47.9% of 2° Medio sits at Insufficient in Maths (SIMCE 2025), arriving just as the formula demands everything.

  • Notación científica y órdenes de magnitud

Scientific notation & orders of magnitude

Reading tables, graphs and experimental data

The solubility curve gets admired as decoration: the reading never happens ("at 40 °C about 60 g fit in 100 g of water"), interpolation does not happen, axes get mixed up. PISA 2022: only 64% of Chilean students reach Level 2 in science, and reading data is what U1 (curves) and U2 (plotting your own data) ask for.

  • Vocabulario disciplinar y modelo particulado (macro/micro/simbólico)

Disciplinary vocabulary & particulate model (macro/micro/symbolic)
